Non Civil War Houses Along the Emmitsburg Road Removed

Visitors standing near the Philip Snyder House, shown on the left will now have a relatively unobstructed view to Devil's Den and Roses Woods. Two houses, across the street from the Snyder House were demolished last week. The demolition activity is shown in the right background. The Civil War Preservation Trust recently raised money to purchase two acres along the Emmittsburg Road in order to give the property to the National Park Service. The property contained some non-Civil War era structures, known as the Reaver Properties, which were removed last week.

Late in the afternoon of July 2, 1863, the 3rd Arkansas Regiment and the 1st Texas Regiment of Robertson's Texas Brigade/Hood's Division/Longstreet's Corps crossed this property as they advanced towards Devil's Den and Rose's Woods, which would be out of sight in the left background. They were attacking towards the line of the United States' Third Army Corps that had been advanced towards Devil's Den, the Wheatfield and the Peach Orchard. This view was taken facing southeast at approximately 4:45 PM on Friday, September 10, 2010.

Soon following them across this property and in support were the 7th, 8th, 9th, 11th, and 59th Georgia regiments of George Anderson's Brigade. This view was taken facing southeast at approximately 4:45 PM on Friday, September 10, 2010.

The Confederates were hit by Union artillery in this area fired from Devil's Den and the Peach Orchard before they were close enough to engage the Union infantry at Devil's Den, Rose's Woods, and the Wheatfield.
