Eleventh Corps at Gettysburg Part 47 With Licensed Battlefield Guide Stuart Dempsey
In the fall of 1863, the Eleventh Corps was transferred from the Army of the Potomac to the western theater. During the Chattanooga and Atlanta Campaigns the units that been a part of the corps at Gettysburg enjoyed significant successes. One of their most actions was "The Battle Above the Clouds" fought at Lookout Mountain, Tennessee on November 24, 1863. Forces under the command of Major General Joseph Hooker, shown here on the white horse, pushed the Confederates off the slope of Lookout Mountain and unfurled the United States flag on the summit to inform those below who now controlled the mountain. This image was painted by James Walker in 1874. It is on display at the Point Park Visitor Center on Lookout Mountain.
